You GLOW Girl

You GLOW Girl is the Belfast based social enterprise that is on a mission to empower vulnerable women and girls in Northern Ireland, helping them to realise and achieve their full potential in life.

In January 2019, Belfast charity GLOW (Giving Life Opportunities to Women) received funding from the National Lottery that would enable them to establish a social enterprise. You GLOW Girl would generate further funding to be invested back into the charity and the mental health programmes being delivered to women and young girls in Northern Ireland.

Fast forward to October 2020, and not only have You GLOW Girl released their Autumn/Winter line of seasonal sweatshirts and hoodies, but they are also now facilitating an educational programme through GLOW Academy which is funded by Community Foundation Northern Ireland. This 20 week course is designed to help women progress in education as well as offering the opportunity to attain practical skills and experience through You GLOW Girl workshops. Participants are shown how to use an embroidery machine, printing machines and a heat press as well as the software used in designing garments.

Upon completing the course, participants may choose to further their education or use their newly acquired skills and experience to seek employment. Others may wish to stay on and volunteer with the charity, which is what GLOW Fundraising and Events Assistant Paula had chosen to do after suffering from depression and subsequently benefiting from a programme delivered by GLOW. Now Paula is employed by GLOW, overseeing the You GLOW Girl production room as well as coordinating GLOW Academy.

GLOW founder Chara Clarke says: ‘It’s so important to buy local and buy social this year. A lot of our fundraising events have been cancelled due to the pandemic and we are increasingly relying on You GLOW Girl as a means of generating income for the charity.’

About GLOW: Located on the street that connects the divided communities of the Falls and the Shankill, GLOW (Giving Life Opportunities to Women) was established through a desire to help local women and girls who were suffering from a range of mental health issues stemming from trauma and/or social issues such as low income and isolation. Chara Clarke, the visionary behind the organisation, identified an opportunity to help through the creation of personal development programmes that would encourage and guide participants in addressing mental health issues as well as setting realistic life goals that will provide a sense of purpose and fulfilment.
