Social Saturday

Please note this is an archived event.  Social Saturday 2017 will take place in September 2017.

Saturday 15 October 2016

On Saturday 15 October Social Saturday will take place in Northern Ireland and across the UK. It is a day to celebrate and buy from social enterprises - businesses that put people and planet first. It is all about Profit with Purpose.

Every purchase we make has an impact on the world in which we live. Social enterprises trade to tackle some of the greatest challenges we face, like unemployment and food waste.

Social Saturday is designed to boost the number of consumers buying from the UK’s 70,000 plus social enterprises. These are businesses with a social mission that reinvest their profits for good.

1 in 7 of all business start-ups are now social enterprises. In villages, towns and cities up and down the country there are increasing numbers of shops, cafes, cinemas and nurseries that are run for the benefit of local communities. Social enterprises tackle social and environmental problems, and use the profits they generate to grow their businesses to do more good.

Social Saturday aims to reach thousands of people to raise awareness of social enterprises and to encourage people to spend their money with them.

On Social Saturday, local social enterprises will be showcasing their products and services across Northern Ireland. Here is just a taste of what you can get involved in:

Better Gyms Belfast will be offering “Kids for a quid” across all its leisure centres; Vineyard Compassion in Coleraine will have discounted logs and kindling to purchase; The Thinking Cup, a social enterprise café on the Lisburn Road will be holding a mini festival and the Vintage Satchel Company offering a massive 30% discount on its online shop (

Colin Jess, Director of Social Enterprise NI, the representative body for social enterprises in Northern Ireland says “We have a thriving social enterprise sector in Northern Ireland with products such as chocolate, soap, ceramics, textiles and coffee shops along with some fantastic service-led businesses that contribute hugely to our society. Social Saturday is a way great to support businesses that really do give something back to society”.
